What is board Certification? Board certification is a voluntary examination and credentialing process that may be undertaken by a specialist, usually after being in practice for several years. It is often done to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in a given specialty. Physicians who are board certified are referred to as diplomates. The American Board of Podiatric Surgery, established in 1975 is an independent, non-profit organization. It is the only certifying board for Podiatric Surgery officially recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, which is the accrediting agency of the American Podiatric Medical Association. To become board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, candidates must demonstrate knowledge of podiatric medicine and surgery. This includes a review of cases to demonstrate excellence in diagnosis, clinical management, surgical technique, decision making and outcomes. In addition, a written test and oral examinations are taken to further demonstrate academic knowledge and the ability to diagnose and treat medical, surgical and trauma cases involving the foot and ankle.
